By adopting the budget for 2021, the conditions for complete modernization of a public transport are obtained

Authorities in Podgorica, the Capital, have been working for a long time to find a quality and sustainable solution for the modernization and popularization of public transport, in accordance with the best practices from the region and Europe.

In this regard, the Capital has decided to approach this problem in a planned and strategic way, so in February the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan was adopted, which envisages a wide range of measures for strategic mobility planning in the city, parking regulation, modernization of public transport and improvement of cycling conditions and hiking. The adoption of the plan was a major milestone for the realization of a vision of Podgorica focused on people and their quality of life.

In May, the mayor formed a special commission with the task to analyze the situation in urban and suburban passenger transport in Podgorica, i.e. to prepare a detailed analysis of the existing technical, financial and organizational condition of public transport, as well as to propose the best model of organization of transportation in Podgorica. It was important to keep in mind that compared to the last model that is still applied, a lot has changed, new residential areas have been built that are not covered by bus lines, the number of inhabitants in all parts of the city has increased, the number of private motor vehicles for better and more comprehensive public transport it is significantly higher.

The conclusion was clear even before the end of the analysis - the city is not satisfied with the situation in public transport, both in terms of line coverage and in terms of service quality, i.e. the condition of vehicles that are currently used. It is estimated that Podgorica needs better public transport in every sense.

In addition to the preparatory work related to the analysis, the Capital is in the financial phase of preparing a public announcement to entrust the performance of regular urban and suburban road transport, which will provide a better and high-quality network of lines that will cover the entire territory of Podgorica.

In addition, the draft budget of the Capital for 2021 proposes an increase in the subsidy for public transport, but also EUR 5 million for the purchase of new buses in order to increase the quality of public transport services.

The mentioned public invitation will be published soon, and after the adoption of the budget for 2021, if everything goes according to plan, other procedures will be carried out.

We remind you that in July, the Capital, also in order to modernize public transport, launched an electronic ticket system, which is a unique ticket that allows you to connect services, so that with one purchased ticket multiple buses can be used, regardless of whether it is about different carriers, in the time period for which the ticket was issued.
