Podgorica on Two Wheels

The project “Podgorica on Two Wheels” was started with the aim of promoting environmental protection and affirming alternative modes of traffic. The project was launched in January 2019, and funds of €10,000 were allocated for its implementation, which were used to subsidise the purchasing of bicycles by citizens – for 50% of the price of a bicycle, up to a maximum of €100. The funds were sufficient to provide bicycles for about 100 citizens. The interest among citizens exceeded the expectations of the City Management, therefore funds for 136 people, the number of applicants for subsidies, were allocated during the first phase.

This project is only part of the plan that the Capital City has been working on for years to improve the quality of life, with the aim of motivating individuals to change to a healthy lifestyle. Podgorica has four cycling corridors so far, with plans for a fifth that would stretch from Gorica to Zabjelo. During the second phase, funds for the purchase of 103 bicycles were distributed, for which an additional €10,000 was allocated. In 2020 a third phase of subsidies was implemented, during which the distribution of funds for the purchase of 100 bicycles and 50 electric scooters was planned. About 587 citizens applied, and the Capital City awarded subsidies to every who submitted all their paperwork. Thanks to that, over 100 citizens gained the right to purchase electric scooters inexpensively, and the same goes for more than 400 citizens who will be able to purchase new bicycles.

“Podgorica on Two Wheels” was started as a pilot project, but when citizens welcomed it with enthusiasm and satisfaction, we decided that it was necessary to continue it, so that as many of our citizens as possible would get a chance to buy a bicycle inexpensively, and with the support of the Capital City.
